Reading together is a great activity that you and your partner can try. However, finding a book that captures both of your interests and encourages discussion can be a challenge, so here are some tips and tricks to help make the process easier!

Okay, now all that’s left before you and your partner embark on this beautiful journey of reading is to actually start the reading. Before you two get lost in the magical world of words, we want to remind you that reading is supposed to be fun, mostly light, and a subject for conversation that helps you two understand each other’s values and views better.

It’s not about reading the exact pages every day at 8pm before bed and then analyzing each chapter for character development (you aren’t grading each other, unless you’re into some teacher roleplay). It’s about finding a book or similar topic to read in the presence of one another or if you’re long distance, through the virtual presence of one another, and then talking about it after. Ask each other questions about how the last few pages made you feel and why.

Now as we have mentioned several times throughout the course, a library is a great way to first find a book. It is an affordable option and if you decide you never want to read again, the book can go back where it came from. Libby is a great virtual library app to consider if you live in an area where there aren’t any libraries around or you can’t commute to one. You and your partner can plan library dates and just scroll through different sections to see which ones appeal to you and if children’s picture books are the only ones that speak to you, then we won’t judge.

If you or your partner need some encouragement to continue reading, then try a series instead of a stand-alone book. Series are great because you want to know what happens next so you continue reading. They also have the best worldbuilding details and you’re likely to forget the real world when you start one. It’s like a trip for free but maybe don’t use that as an alternative when your partner suggests you two travel somewhere for the long weekend.

If you’re the type of person who likes dates to be a little formal, then you can definitely go to a bookstore and read over coffee. You can even try dressing up as your favorite characters to spice things up! Just be careful of state laws, no one wants to see you two dressed up in loincloths just because you read a book about the Aztec Empire.

We wish you and your partner all the best and hope you consider reading as an option next time you find yourselves wondering what to do!
