The 100% Ownership Principle

Hey everyone – it’s Tim, the creator of Couply!

Last weekend we attended the Real Love Ready relationship summit, learning from the biggest relationship experts in the world. We LOVE to invest in our own learning from the best… so we can pass on these learnings to you!

There was one topic brought up by John Kim (@theangrytherapist) which really resonated with me – and I want to share with with you.

Relationships may be 50-50 in terms of partnership, but each partner must take 100% responsibility for their contribution.

This sounds simple, but challenges this deep rooted idea challenges of the traditional quid pro quo mentality—where each of us trade efforts like a fluctuating currency— “I’ll be kinder WHEN you clean up better,” or “I’ll clean up more if you’re nice about it,” and instead emphasizes EACH of us giving that 100% off the bat.

What Does Conditional Effort in Relationships Mean?

So, many of us get into the pattern of conditional love in relationships: "I'll do this, if you do that."

However, this mindset can lead to a tallying system, where efforts are measured and weighed = breeding resentment.

The "conditional effort" reduces the rich, complex human experience of love to a transaction.

And here is the thing: Each of us has 100% responsibility to OUR 50% of the relationship.

At the heart of the idea was a shift towards ownership. When both partners commit to bringing their 100% to the relationship without immediately expecting something in return, the dynamic fundamentally changes.

This doesn't mean ignoring your needs or tolerating poor treatment; rather, it's about each of us committing to contributing fully and lovingly to the partnership.
