The Only 3 Tips You’ll Need to Surviving a Long Distance Relationship (LDR)

Long Distance Relationships have to be one of the hardest burdens to carry when in a romantic relationship, and it can really suck.

I was in an LDR for only 3 months, and it was only through these tips that me and my partner were able to enjoy our relationship through the months. Here are some tips and tricks that may give you and your bae another way to survive long-distance relationships.

1. Trust is IMPORTANT in the relationship, and so is Communication.

I cannot say enough how important it is, to be honest and transparent in your relationship during this time apart. It instills the foundation of your relationship, but that also means being an effective communicator too.

Following through on promises, being supportive of your partner, and managing your expectations and concerns with each other are going to keep you both aware of what's going on in the relationship.

And PLEASE, be more open with communication preferences during this time.

It will most likely be more fluid and not precise. You are both living two separate lives away from each other, so it is only natural that you won’t be able to talk at the same time or amount every day.

I recommend using the check-in feature in Couply on how you both feel when there is a big switch in the usual routine, to realign and adjust those expectations.

2. Keep the Romance Alive by still planning dates and fun activities together

I think one of the biggest mistakes made when being in an LDR is forgetting that you don’t have to chat on the phone or wait until you see each other to have a date! There are SEVERAL ways to have fun still together and enjoy each other's company.

Do you both love eating dessert before bed or drinking coffee in the morning? Schedule a hangout where you both can simply do this! And it doesn't have to be long! A simple 20-minute chat over coffee before work can make anyone smile.

You can go even further by planning virtual date nights, sending care packages to each other, or even writing letters. There are so many ways to keep the romance going, and if you need help, hop on Couply AI for some lovely ideas, or check out our blog filled with ways to spend with your partner!

3. Keep the Hope Alive in the LDR, and Make the Distance Temporary

I’m going to say something we all are thinking: Long Distance Relationships are NOT meant to be a long-term thing. The point of staying together in an LDR is for the HOPE of seeing the other again and ultimately being together again.

I know everyone’s story is different and we all know many what-ifs can come with this statement, but there does come a point where both need to ask when and how long before you both are not in LDR anymore.

The main thing that keeps an LDR strong is knowing the end goal that we will be reunited with our partner at the end of the day.

If my partner or I had not known when we would see each other next, or how long we would be apart, it would have put even more strain, leading to other what-ifs and loneliness.

Now, of course, any relationship can work as long as both partners are willing to work on it. But try these tips, and I can assure you that your LDR will be ready for the test!
